Is Botox harmful? Botox, whose use in muscle diseases dates back 40-45 years, has been used for aesthetic purposes for 15 years, and no side effects have been detected during this time. Because it is used in very small doses and does not spread throughout the body, Botox is safe and harmless. This protein only relaxes the superficial muscles under the skin. Approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), Botox is widely used throughout the world.

Where is Botox used?

It is used to treat horizontal lines on the forehead, vertical lines between the eyebrows, eyebrow lifting, wrinkles around the eyes caused by facial expressions, visible upper gums, vertical lines on the upper and lower lips (smoker's lines), horizontal lines between the lower lip and chin, and wrinkles on the neck.

Besides reducing wrinkles, is it used for other purposes as well?

Botox is also used to treat excessive sweating in the hands, feet, face, and armpits. When applied to sweaty areas, it reduces the activity of sweat glands by stopping the transmission between sweat glands and nerve endings. For individuals suffering from excessive sweating and associated body odor, Botox injections to the affected areas provide relief for 8-12 months.

How is Botox applied?

Botox is injected into the muscle at several points using special needles with very fine tips. The patient does not experience significant pain during the procedure. The entire process takes 5-10 minutes.

How long does the effect of Botox last?

The effects of Botox begin 3-7 days after application and last for 4-9 months (average 6 months). With increasing application times, the effects of Botox can last up to 12 months.

Who should administer Botox?

Botox is a medication that should be administered by specialist doctors who have received training in this area.

Recently, Botox and filler injections have been administered by unauthorized individuals or physicians in some aesthetic and beauty centers or clinics. If not performed by qualified professionals, these procedures can result in serious side effects such as tissue damage (necrosis) and the risk of dangerous infections. In addition, some of these centers are using counterfeit or fake products under the guise of approved Botox and fillers.

It is recommended that you request information about the product you will be using from your doctor before the procedure and verify its authenticity. We remind you that your procedures should only be performed safely and scientifically by a "dermatologist or plastic surgeon".

Will wrinkles worsen if Botox treatments are discontinued?

No. Wrinkles will eventually return to their original state, or even remain in better condition than before, because no new wrinkles will form in the intervening period.

Who should not receive Botox?

Although no harmful effects have been observed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, these procedures are not recommended. They are also not used in neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis and Eaton-Lambert syndrome.

Is there an age limit?

Botox can be used for cosmetic purposes on anyone over the age of 20 who has deep expression wrinkles.

Are there any side effects?

Botox injections have no side effects when performed by physicians with experience and training in this area. Mild redness may occur after the application. Pain and discomfort are minimal. In case of incorrect application, short-term eyelid drooping (4-6 weeks) may occur.

Does Botox cause facial paralysis? Will it result in a blank, expressionless face?

No, with Botox, in experienced hands, only some unwanted muscle movements (frowning, wrinkling, etc.) are reduced without altering the natural appearance.

Because they increase the risk of bruising, blood-thinning medications (aspirin, warfarin, anticoagulants) should not be taken one week prior to the procedure.

The face can be washed and all makeup products can be used immediately after the application. It is recommended to frequently exercise the facial muscles of the treated area for 2-4 hours.

Botox does not provide permanent changes. Botox applications only improve wrinkles in certain areas of your face for a limited time. Botox is an extremely practical and safe method; the application is quick and painless; no special care is required; it does not affect the patient's normal life in any way; and no local or general anesthesia is needed. When applied by experienced specialist physicians to carefully selected individuals, it yields quite satisfactory results, even if only temporarily.
